Introduction
For my first Apollo project this school year, I decided to look at the role social media plays in mental health. I feel that it is important to educate myself on how social media works and how it can effect our mental health because social media has become a big part of our society and it is an industry that is only going to continue to grow.
History
For the history portion of my project, I wanted to look at the connection between social media and mental disorders. Throughout my infographic I incorporated facts and statistics to explain the relationship between social media and mental disorders in context. All of the information I was was really fascinating, but also scary at the same time. Since the creation of social media, studies have shown that there has been a significant increase in reported mental disorder cases. For example, the rate of adolescence reporting symptoms of depression in a given year has by increased 52% from 2005 to 2017. The rate of suicidal thoughts in young adults has also grown by 47% from 2008 to 2017. I decided to use all of the facts and statistics that I accumulated to created an infographic that reflect the information. If you would like to view the infographic, click the button below :)
English
For the English portion of my project, I decided to write a satirical essay about how young kids should start using social media at a young age so it's easier for them to adjust to the toxicity of social media. Throughout the cycle of my project, I analyzed several satirical essays to gain a better understanding of how to write one. One essay that stood out to me was "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift. A detail that I really liked about this essay was the author uses statistics and facts to support his claim, even though he doesn't truly believe in his claim. This detail make his claim seem more realistic and it made the essay more ironic. I also tried to incorporate statistics and facts into my essay so it had a similar effect. The facts and statistics I incorporated into my website also provided my claim with context. If you would like to read my essay, click the button below :)
