Introduction
I decided to do my third Apollo project on man-made disasters. The three man-made disasters I focused on were the Titanic, Three Mile Island, and Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. I chose these man-made disasters because they eached affected our country in a different way. For example as a result of the Titanic it is now required for there to be enough lifeboat space for every passenger on board and due to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 which increased penalties for companies responsible for oil spills and required that oil tankers in the United States have a double hull.
Language Arts
For the language arts portion of my project I write an essay on how man-made disasters have impacted our country. I included reasoning into my essay by supporting my reasons on why these disasters have changed the world with researched information and critical thinking. Each paragraph in my essay focuses on the three man-made disasters I based my project on. In each paragraph I explain what each man-made disaster is, how it ruined our world, and what was change to prevent a disaster like this from happening again. For example, as a result of the Titanic the Radio Act of 1927 was passed. The act was passed due to misinformation signaled over the air from unlicensed operators during the time of the accident. Another example is as a result of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which president George H.W Bush signed into law that year. The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 increased penalties for companies responsible for oil spills and required that all oil tankers in United States waters have a double hull. History & Art
For this project my history and art portions were combined. I decided to create a metal sculpture since a majority of man-made disasters are made out of metal. To incorporate reasoning into my project I included metaphors in my sculpture that relate to the three man-made disasters that I focused on. For example, I put one blue screw and one black screw side by side. The blue screw represents what the ocean looked like before the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill and the black screw represents what it looked like afterwards. I also included two pennies in my sculpture to represent the expensive cost of repairing everything after the disasters. In the middle of the sculpture there is a large circular shaped object with a penny in the middle that was made to represent a human eye. This metal eye represents that humans are only focused on the money and not if what we create is good for the environment or not. Below there is photo of my metal sculpture.
