Introduction
For my second Apollo project I chose immigration as my topic because I believe it is an important topic in our country and around the world. I also have ancestors who immigrated to America in the early 1900 so I thought it would be interesting to learn more about what they went through.
Art
For the art portion of my project I bought a wooden box from A.C Moore and I added to it to represent My family. On the top of my box is a map of Karlino, Poland, which is the city that Jan Koszela, one of my great-great grandparents lived in before he immigrated to America. On the left side of the box is an image of the Amerika, which is the boat the Maryanna Skarbek, one of my great-great grandmothers immigrated on. On the right side of the box is an image of the Smaland, which is the boat that Jan Koszela immigrated on. Inside the box is information about my great-great ancestors.
History
The history portion of my project is everything I put inside my box. Inside my box I included images of my great-great ancestors after they immigrated to America, ship manifests, a small box that was made in Poland, and the essay I wrote for the language arts aspect of my project. I really enjoyed the history portion of my project because I was able to learn a lot more about my past and where I came from. I was also able to understand life from their perspective and understand what it meant to be an immigrant into the early 1900.
Language Arts
For language arts I wrote an essay from my perspective on immigration. The introduction paragraph talks about my ancestors who immigrated from Poland to America and how my family and I still honor them today. The first body paragraph focuses on why I think immigration is a positive thing for America. I gave examples on how immigrants contribute to our country such as starting businesses. The second body paragraph on Donald Trump's wall and why I believe it would only do bad things for our country because it would hinder future immigrants from helping our country evolve. The final body paragraph compares immigration laws in the early 1900, which was when my great-great grandparents immigrated, to 2019. For example, in the early 1900 they would allow you to become an American citizen as long as you sort of understood English. However, today you have to be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. In the early 1900 the process would only take between 3-5 hours, and today it can take years. The conclusion paragraph just restates all of my leading points on why I think immigration is important to our country because I personally believe that our country was built on immigration, so without immigration we would not be the country we are today.
